The struggle to create a work-life balance is something everyone deals with, especially parents. So for Father’s Day this year, BMW collaborated with Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai and The Loft Films to tell the story of a father as imagined through the eyes of his son. The short film for the All-New BMW X3 explores the trials of having to find time to fit everything in.

The short film stars celebrities Mark Zhao and Song Jia, who, just as their characters, have obviously come very far in their careers. As it follows Zhao’s character and his son, the film cleverly displays the relationships between colleagues, and parents and children, and how they are always living in this balance. As director Martin Werner pointed out, it is a particularly interesting subject in China where work culture is often seen as very intense.
短片由赵又廷和宋佳出演，正如同故事中的人物一样，他们也都事业有成。广告追随赵又廷的角色和儿子的角色，精妙地呈现了同事、父母和孩子之间的关系，以及是如何时刻保持这种平衡关系的。导演Martin Werner指出，这个话题在中国非常有意思，因为通常人们都认为中国的工作文化很紧张。

The work comes from an incredibly international team – creatives of different cultures, including Canadian, Turkish and Chinese, plus Danish director Werner himself. They were tasked to create an honest script respectful of these universal themes in a Chinese setting. Werner explained, “The casting director, production designer, cinematographer – we were all listening to each other trying to find out how to craft a script that resonates. Writing dialogue in a film like this was extremely collaborative and quite honestly very complicated.”
这部作品由非常优秀的国际团队打造 – 创意团队来自加拿大、土耳其、中国不同文化背景，导演Werner则来自丹麦。团队的任务是打造真实的脚本，忠实工作生活平衡这个普世主题，但又要跟中国环境结合起来。Werner解释道，“选角导演、制作设计、摄影师一起，我们聆听彼此的意见，找到能让大家产生共鸣的脚本。给这样的小短片编写对话需要很强的合作性，坦白来讲，也非常复杂。”
Werner also mentioned how it was bold to show a man is struggling to find this balance. “Mark Zhao’s character was struggling emotionally with being away from his family, which is something that you wouldn’t normally say as a Chinese man or in business, that, ‘This is difficult.’ You would say, ‘This is needed, this is expected, this is good,’” explained Werner.
也提到，展现一个男人在寻求工作生活之间的平衡的艰辛是很大胆的。”赵又廷扮演的角色不在家人身边，情感上很痛苦，但是一个中国男人，一个商务人士，一般是不会吐露这些苦楚的，不会说’这太难了。’相反却会说，’我需要这样，这是对我的期望，这样挺好的，‘”Werner解释说。
Producing the 15-minute film took approximately two and a half months of production, and a lot of back and forth collaborating between all parties involved. In the end, it was an 8-day shoot in Shanghai, often scheduled around the shorter shooting windows of the 5-year-old star.
15分钟的短片制作花了将近两个半月的时间，各方来来回回沟通。最终在上海拍摄花了8天时间，往往都要去适应5岁小演员有限的时间。
Casting of course is always important, and something which often stumps producers in China, particularly for long and acting-heavy spots like this. Even more difficult is finding children for such a long shoot, and when the performance is so important. Yunhao Kun, the young star, was finally chosen after a month of casting, and, as Werner said, “performed beyond expectations, he was really talented.”
演员选取当然一直都很重要，在中国这也总让制片人很犯难，尤其是这一次的短片对演员要求很高，时间又长。更难的是这么长时间的拍摄中小演员的选取，表演可是重中之重。在历时一个月的选角之后，小演员寇耕豪成为最终人选，正如Werner所说，“他的表演超出了我们的预期，他真的很有表演天赋。”
At the end of production, Martin Werner was left feeling uplifted and excited after his first shoot in China and wants to come back soon. “I loved it and was blown away by the quality of the team. I really loved every single minute of the production, and the way Loft handled it was really a joy ride. I would love to come back for sure. I think everybody on set could vouch for that, I said the same thing.”
制作接近尾声时，导演Martin Werner十分兴奋，意犹未尽，第一次来中国拍摄之后，已经迫不及待再回来了。“我很享受，也被团队的品质所折服。制作的每一分每一秒我都乐在其中，Soft的做事方式也很令人愉悦。毫无疑问我还想再回中国，片场每个人都可证明这一点，我跟他们都说过我要回来。”
