To the sound of church bells in the background, SHP+ catches up with French music producer Thomas Faucheur in his new home in the Italian Riviera. Faucheur is still getting used to the idyllic scenario around him. It’s a major change from Shanghai, where he lived for over six years working as general manager for Green United Music, or Singapore, where he had moved to open a new office for Fin Design+Effects. As it happened to many people, Covid-19 disrupted his long-term plans and sent him on a path to reinvent himself. Faucheur is now launching his latest project, Open Arts, a creative platform to connect artists and brands for exciting and mutually beneficial collaborations in China.
Away from Asia but eager to continue his Chinese adventure, it took Faucheur a few months of self-reflection and a few more of ideation—Open Arts was officially born in April 2021. “We work as a bridge between artists and brands: music, fine arts, immersive art and tech., whatever you like. The name itself says it all—we have an open-minded way of work. People like to put everything in a box, but we really are an open box,” he says. With Open Arts, Faucheur wants to shape creative projects with his clients and artists and take them into exciting new places.
Naturally, its central pillar is music. O Music is one branch of the platform and the center of Faucheur’s attention right now. “O Music is the summary of what I have been doing for the past twenty-five years and is shaped the way I wanted: a music house to help companies and agencies with all aspects of a soundtrack,” he explains, “but with a little something that makes the difference!”
O Music has four divisions: Original Music & Sound Design, Music Library, Music Licensing, and Orchestra.
Original Music & Sound Design
Unlike the standard practice in the industry that favors freelancers, Faucheur actually signed five music composers and one sound designer to work on an exclusive collaboration in the Greater China and Singapore markets.
“In this business, composers are like ghosts. No one ever mentions their names. No one knows who they are and what their profile is; I never liked this model. With O Music, the composers will get credited,” Faucheur says.
He thinks his model makes all the difference in building a trustful relationship with the composers while getting them to take part closely in the brainstorming process with the agency and himself. His talent pool is versatile, with considerable experience working on films. Each composer has an area of expertise: pop-rock, electro-pop, orchestral music, and edgy electro-experimental.
As far as sound design goes, Félix Davin, a young award nominee and promising sound design artist, now composes the O Music team.
Online music libraries are powerful resources in commercial film production. They come in very handy when you have no time or budget to develop an original track. It’s an increasing trend that attracts more talented composers by the day, spanning hundreds of styles and creating thousands of tracks.
Through O Music, Faucheur will promote the French music library BAM Music in Greater China and Singapore. BAM Music which is already established in London, Los Angeles and Montréal is proud to bring its edgy and sharp music approach to these new territories. With a team based in China, Thomas has been working on a series of localisation efforts, such as translating a significant part of the platform to the Chinese language and adopting payment methods compatible with the region, notably WeChat Pay and Alipay. The BAM Music China website will go online in September. Meanwhile, its international version is already online and requires no VPN for access.
“Even though clients will search directly on the platform, download and pay for tracks online, our O Music team will assist them in what they need. For instance, we can help them in music searches for specific usage for no extra cost!” Faucheur adds.
Over the years, Faucheur had his fair share of music licensing, clearing tracks in China for several commercial films for clients such as Samsung, Cartier, Adidas, Fanta, and Ford. He understands the complexity of the business, which involves contractual negotiations and legal procedures. Above all, he knows it requires a significant level of trust because of the extraordinary sums of money involved.
The apple of Faucheur‘s eye is the Orchestra subdivision of O Music. He has recently signed an exclusive representation contract for Greater China and Singapore with The Fame’s Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra, an acclaimed and award-winning orchestra with much experience collaborating with studios from Europe and Hollywood in films and commercials.
While working in Europe, he had many opportunities to work with orchestra music, recording in many places, from London to Sofia. Still, he says things work differently in China. Chinese orchestras rarely have the experience of working on commercial projects or films. And when they do, their price tag is remarkably prohibitive. That’s where his differential lies.
“We can offer orchestra production at a highly competitive price. Much, much less than the average in China and Western Europe,” he says. Because we have fully integrated remote working into our lives, Faucheur hopes that agencies and clients will consider using the orchestra to orchestral soundtracks.
Besides O Music, Faucheur has other “Os” to develop in the long run, and many more exciting projects are sure to arise from them. For instance, for O Immersive, he’s devising an immersive theatre experience in Shanghai related to the iconic French feature film Amélie Poulain. On top of that, there’s also an immersive wellness experience in Shanghai on the horizon.
Open Arts, for now, focuses on China, Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. In the future, Faucheur also hopes to develop projects in Europe. At the height of his career, the world is his oyster.
