Juice _ Reel 2019 – Animation & VFX
Polish 3D & Visual Effects company JUICE has announced their local representation office OPENING in Shanghai this year. SHP+ had a chance to chat to Adam Tunikowski, the founder and CEO of one of the leading, independently owned design and postproduction companies in the World.
波兰3D和视效公司JUICE是全球领先的独立设计及后期制作公司之一。其宣布上海地方代表处将于今年开业。SHP+借此机会采访了JUICE创始人兼CEO Adam Tunikowski。

1/ What is the approximate date of the official opening? 大概什么时候正式开业?
Since there is still a lot to do and we want to make sure the needs of the clients have been met, we plan to open the office in Q3 of 2020. We plan to offer some direct services prior to official launch, though. Our goal is to make sure the clients have direct contact to the services we offer. We do not want to be perceived like so many other companies who just get the jobs done abroad – we want to aim to engage directly with production houses, agencies and clients in China.
还有很多工作要做,而且我们希望确保能迎合客户们的需求,所以计划2020年第三季度开业,但在正是开业之前想先提供部分直接服务。我们的目标是让客户直接接触到我们的服务。我们不希望自己被视作如很多其他公司那样,只在海外把工作完成。我们要与中国的制作公司、代理公司和客户直接取得互动。
2/ Where will the office be based? What is the physical address? 公司具体会设立在哪里?
We plan to open the office in Changning District. We looked at many different plans for what would be most convenient for our clients in terms of travel time and possible co-operation. However, Shanghai has a very diverse structure – in contrast to some European, Japanese or US cities there is no clear area which would is preferential to the another – but Changning seems to be pretty convenient. Our precise address is still to be unveiled as we are in progress of negotiating two possible locations in that area.
想开在长宁区。其实为了方便客户,从交通时间和配合方式上我们会考虑几个方案。然而,上海的结构非常多元,相比一些欧洲、日本和美国城市,这里没有哪个区域是更优的。现在我们有两个具体的位置选择,还在商谈中,稍后发布。
3/ How many people will be at the office in the beginning? And in what positions? 初始阶段公司会有多少人?做什么工作?
Given our previous experience in opening front offices in Tokyo and Hamburg we always try to meet the market expectations. So, first crew will consist of:
根据之前在东京和汉堡开设办公室的经验,我们会努力满足市场的期待。所以第一批员工会由以下人士组成:
a) a local post-producer who will have a vast experience already in the market with animation and VFX driven projects.
a) 本地后期制作,需具备该市场上以动画和视觉特效为主的丰富的项目经验。
b) an art-director who will be able to design concepts / storyboards and make swift changes to current animations on the run in order to convey the client’s message quickly to the animation crew.

c) a VFX supervisor who will be able to be on top of all the technical hurdles in regards to the projects and lead the small crew in-house as well as supervise on set.

d) we also are taking under consideration creating a grading unit to help out in finishing the project, but this is still to be discussed depending on final location we pick.

4/ How big and how fast are you hoping / planning to grow? 你们计划的发展规模和速度是怎样的?
We plan to grow organically, so, the growing needs of the clients in Shanghai would determine how much shall we expand and grow. Ideally, we would like to maintain the working style we have in Japan and Germany, and which is also planned for USA; having a crew of 10-12 that can react on site, while all the heavier VFX challenges would be sent back to Europe and addressed there.
我们打算按照原生的方式发展,也就是说,最终要由上海这边的客户决定我们的发展规模。理想的情况是按照我们在日本和德国的做法,美国那边也打算这样,即先建立一个10-12人的团队,能够应付现场的工作,所有繁重的视效工作则同步给欧洲,由那边处理完后返回上海。
5/ We know that you already do a lot of work for Chinese clients from Poland, will the main work for China still be done there? How will the pipeline be organized ? 我们知道,你们在波兰已经为中国的客户做过很多工作了。主要工作会交给外边的人做去吗?沟通方面怎么组织?
15 years in the business and working with the clients all over the world has influenced our approach and helped us to create a pipeline based on encrypted file synchronization. This way we are able to move pretty flexibly between different time-zones, teams and projects. We’re always pursuing the best solutions for our client’s needs. We hope to extend a similar network to Shanghai; while most direct needs, including online and offline presentation, VFX WIPs would be offered locally in China, most of the heavy lifting would be sent over to Europe to benefit from the talent already gathered in the main office.
We believe the main point is to make it comfortable to work directly with everyone. Hence, we put the emphasis on the design, production and supervision process as those are the main direct points between us and the client.
我们在这个行业已经超过15年了,与全球各地的客户打交道影响了我们的工作方法,因此而建立了一条加密档案同步传播渠道,这样就可以在不同时区、团队和项目之间保持灵活的移动。我们一直追求符合客户需求的最佳方案,希望能将以上类似的网络架构拓展到上海。多数的客户直接需求是线上和线下展示,所以视效WIPs会由中国本地提供。多数繁重工作会发给欧洲那边,因为当地的主办公室已经配备好成熟的人才。
我们认为,重要的是让所有需要我们服务的人,在直接的这种合作中都感觉舒适。为此,我们很重视设计进程、制作以及程序指导,这些是我们与客户之间主要的直接触点。

6/ Who will be the person in charge ? A local hire with their own network of clients or a foreigner ?负责人是谁?有客户资源的本地人还是外国人?
Language is the first priority in best creating the relationships. So, we are aiming to have a local hire lead the office. It’s less about the network itself, as Juice has done quite a bit of work on the market already and worked with a big share of the companies in the market. It’s mostly about comfort and ensuring the communication is kept at the highest possible level.
语言是第一优先,所以我们想找本地人来领导上海办公室。在这方面,对于公司架构的考虑就会少一些。由于Juice已经在本地市场上做了很多工作,也跟这里的很多公司都取得了合作,所以我们尽可能保证舒适和沟通顺畅。
7/ What is the purpose of your opening in Shanghai ? What goals are you planning to achieve and how fast ? 为什么在上海开办公室?想实现什么样的目标,多长时间之内实现?
Our goal is for our clients to be able to feel the vibe of working more closely with us, and also to understand the wider spectrum of what Juice can offer and how we can help in solving their problems. Juice’s reputation in China is mostly about our obvious VFX capacities, but there are many more things that we can help with, from design, directing, possible sound design – even shooting services in Europe and museum exhibits. So, over the course of the next few years we want this message to sink in. We don’t need to rush it – we just want clients in China understand we are there for them in many capacities.
我们的目标是,让客户感受到与我们亲密接触的气氛,了解Juice的服务范围以及用这些服务解决客户问题的能力。Juice为中国带来的主要是视效能力,除此之外也有很多其他能为客户提供帮助的地方,包括设计、导演、欧洲实景拍摄以及博物馆展览。未来几年,我们希望在本地市场传递这些信息。我们不冒进,只是希望中国的客户知道我们一直在这里守候。
8/ How well do you know the Chinese market and your local competition? 你们对中国市场以及竞争者了解多少?
We are doing the research now and trying to constantly learn about the market itself and the fact that China is the fastest developing market in the world. There is plenty of local talent we have found, and we see that the local VFX market will be huge in the region. I also feel that local companies who are doing such an amazing work will eventually rise to a world-level recognition.
现在正在做研究。我们尽量对该市场保持持续的了解,当然,中国是世界上发展最快的市场,所以我们还是很了解的。我们遇到了大量本地人才,这里的视效市场是巨大的。同时我也觉得,本地公司做得非常不错,它们会在全球得到认可。
While we operate from Europe its sometimes harder for us to compete with some of the locally-based foreign companies like the Australian ones oror big players like MPC who are already well established in the region. However, I believe we have some advantages – especially creatively and mentally to be able to work with China. I always feel that there is a mental connection between hard working people in China and Poland specifically. We understand the concept of too short deadlines and strained budgets. And always try to adopt and accommodate solutions to meet needs.
我们在欧洲,有时候更难与部分外来公司竞争,比如澳大利亚的公司,或者MPC这种成熟的大公司。但我相信Juice在中国是有优势的,特别是创意和思维方面。我一直觉得勤劳的中国人和波兰人思想方面是有连接点的。我们都能认识到:时间紧,预算少。我们总是尽量让方案符合对方需求。
I also do not particularly like the concept of constant struggle. Juice has always been about connecting, so we hope to work both with local companies and foreign companies alike. I have always believed the best projects come out of collaboration between companies like Juice and MPC rather than struggle and competition.
我不太喜欢持续的争端。Juice是连接性的,我们希望与本地公司和外国公司都能合作。我一直都认为最好的项目出自像Juice和MPC这样的公司之间的协作,而不是仅靠争端和竞争。
