The freshly released commercial film for the mobile version of the game “Call of Duty” is a three-minute blockbuster. According to STARTFilms, the production house behind the commercial film, they first came across the project back in March 2019. After rounds and rounds of iterations, the script was shaped into a “action-packed blockbuster, where guns are fired every second”. The mobile version of “Call of Duty” is the long-awaited arrival of the hit game, with the promo needing to live up to its high expectations. Creativity-wise, it’s not a usual one agency type of commercial film, but more of a close-knit collaboration between the client’s in-house Tencent TGideas, and STARTFilms teams. Bringing to life the vision for the spot required casting actors with a very specific skillset, stunt crew, extensive set construction, and an experienced costume and make-up team to approximate the promo to how characters looked in the game. To amp up the difficulty level, the production house decided to shoot the entire commercial with a long take. In addition, every complicated action move was rehearsed up to 50 times before the camera rolling. Filming in Taiwan this year, meaning the team battled with August’s near typhoon season: challenging weather during recce, a truck with equipment stuck on the muddy road, delayed shooting.

Contrary to the misunderstanding created by the cover image for the commercial, that appears across the internet, Jay Chou certainly did not direct the spot. Zero Lin, a director known for shooting commercials with a “cinematic grandeur” rose to the occasion. He brought a lot to the table, contributing as a creative at the idea/script-shaping stage. As STARTFilms’ founding director, Lin worked on a number of production house’s spots, including army-themed ad for Taobao 《夜操场》(Night Playground), as well as spots for VW & New Balance, Like Shuo app, Ant Financial to name a few. For the “Call of Duty” mobile version commercial film, Lin also took a very hands-on approach to post-production. To make sure that gun artillery, tanks, and explosions looked authentic, the director and post-production artists made many rounds of modifications. The post-production went to the award-winning Polish studio Platige Image, which is no surprise. The studio is especially renowned for cinematic world-known games, who also recently worked on the trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.
而这部传遍网络的广告片的封面,的确容易造成误会,其实这部影片的导演并非周杰伦,而是林哲乐导演。林导擅长拍摄宏大的商业大片,他为这部影片投入了很多,在头脑风暴,剧本修改的阶段便贡献了很多创意与想法。作为STARTFilms内部导演,他参与的项目其中包括STARTFilms为淘宝摄制的军事主题广告《夜操场》,一汽大众与New Balance合作的短片,英语流利说APP广告片以及蚂蚁聚宝宣传片等等。在拍摄《使命召唤手游版》广告片期间,林导也是亲力亲为地关注着后期制作的部分。为了确保片中的大炮,坦克和爆破场景真实可信,导演与后期艺术家们来回地沟通修改。当然,找到知名获奖波兰工作室Platige Image负责后期也是意料之中。该工作室尤以场景宏大的世界知名游戏项目而闻名,他们最近还参与了《使命召唤:黑色行动、冷战》和《战区》的预告片的制作。

To date, this blockbuster commercial for the mobile game amassed 19.5 million views on the official Weibo alone. Endorsement by Jay Chou certainly did its strategic contribution to boost mass appeal for the title, but undeniably, so did the commercial itself, executed on a scale of a mini action film.
