The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, which kicks off tomorrow (Saturday 18th June), is the largest and most important event on the worldwide advertising industry calendar, attracting around 12,000 delegates for eight days of inspiration, parties and networking on the French Riviera.

The 63rd iteration of the festival promises to be the biggest in its history. The hundreds of creative presentations that make up the Cannes Lions program run alongside three distinct categories: Lions Health, returning for its third year, a series of talks exploring the meaning, function and value of creativity in the healthcare communications sector; Lions Innovation, an always fascinating program of the most cutting edge technology that is changing the face of the communications industry; and Lions Entertainment, a new program for 2016, exploring the potential for cross-pollination between brands, agencies and entertainment companies and how content can be elevated into the mainstream.

Saturday 25th is all about the awards, the most prestigious prizes on the planet, attracting 40,000 entries from over 90 different countries, culminating in four ceremonies and a deluge of champagne. WPP Worldwide Creative Director, John O’Keeffe summed up the value of winning a Lion, “Cannes is the only global, cross discipline show, covering advertising, design, digital, media, promo, effectiveness, and everything else besides… If you are number one at Cannes, you’ve done it the hard way, the proper way, the only way.”

The magnitude of the event is such that China’s participation continues to grow every year, despite a well-known general industry indifference to international awards. Last year saw an all-time record 330 delegates from the Middle Kingdom, a number that should be bettered in 2016. Work from the China market is increasingly competitive too, scooping 14 awards in 2009, their first Grand Prix in 2011, and more than 100 Lions between 2010 and 2015.
