Yu Yang teaches making of puppets in Shanghai Theater Academy, mainly focusing on rod puppets, marionettes, hand puppets, and shadow play puppets. As a passionate fan of technological materials and machinery, Yu Yang is also fascinated with light weight carbon fiber, as well as combination of traditional and modern technology, so he often uses 3D printing and cutting machines to make puppets material.

我是上海戏剧学院的木偶制作教师，主要教授：杖头木偶，提线木偶，布袋木偶，皮影的制作。但是作为科技材料爱好者和狂热的机械迷，我也使用3D打印和CNC切割制作木偶材料，对高强度和轻量化的碳纤维材料十分着迷。在传统和现代的碰撞出积极的尝试着。

1. Favorite Chinese saying? 最喜欢的一句中国谚语是？

An artisan must first sharpen his tools if he is to do his work well (工欲善其事，必先利其器). I’ve always liked to spend a little more on better quality tools. Unlike artists who need to support themselves, the advantage of being a teacher is that there are more opportunities to experiment.

我总喜欢花大价钱购买质量更好的材料和工具，不同于需要养活自己的艺术家，作为教师的好处是有更多的尝试机会。

3. Best restaurant in Shanghai? 上海最赞的餐厅是哪里？

I think my favorite Shanghai restaurant is Ding Tele, the one in the alleyway of Huaihai Road. Even though it doesn’t serve five spice beef noodle anymore, but I like other dishes, and that it’s open 24 hours.

我觉得我最喜欢上海的顶特勒餐厅，在淮海路的一个弄堂里，尽管他家现在已经没有五香牛筋面了，但是其他的我都还很喜欢。24个小时都可以吃到。

4. Favorite smell? 最喜欢的味道？

All natural scents of wood— Sandalwood, Camphor, Rosewood, Englewood etc.

各种木头的天然香味，檀香、樟木、紫檀、沉香等

5. Someone you would like to have dinner with? 想跟谁一起共进晚餐？

Elon Musk. I’d like to talk with him about Tesla and rocket recovery.
